Rio Tinto praises Chinese mining equipment
World’s number two mining company Rio Tinto’s CEO claimed, at an investor conference last week, that the quality of Chinese mining equipment is catching up to that of major US manufacturers.
CEO Sam Walsh said his company has been increasingly purchasing heavy equipment and other items form India and China and said that the quality has been impressive.
Walsh said “funnily enough” on the rail cars “the quality actually was much higher” compared to the miner’s traditional supplier: “Instead of spot welds, for example, on the sheet metal they were actually continuous welds.”
An analyst with JP Morgan said that quality of Chinese equipment differs but added that “it’s incredible the speed at which they are coming up the quality curve
Largest Slag Pot Carriers of Asia
Two slag pot carriers (110 tons), the largest ones in Asia in terms of dead weight tonnage, were smoothly delivered for service in Fujian Fuxin Special Steel Co., Ltd. on January 15, 2013. These two carriers were designed and manufactured independently by the Heavy Machine Company of MCC Baosteel Technology Services Co., Ltd. (BTS), and the manufacturing process lasted for as long as one year.
This is deemed to be a new historical breakthrough achieved by the Heavy Machine Company, following the production of the slag pot carrier (100 tons) in 2008, which was the largest one in China at that time. The protection grade of the cab is rated as IP65 (dust-proof and closed, proof of water jet). The rated load capacity is 110 tons and the maximum load capacity is 120 tons. In comparison with the former slag pot carrier (100 tons), the dead weight is deducted by about 5 tons. Moreover, several advanced technologies have been employed, for instance, pot tunbler of 180°, emergency power steering, double-line explosion protection technology, and buffering technique for pot lifting and laying-down. On this ground, the safety and stability of the overall carrier have been enhanced up to the leading level of the whole world.
The Heavy Machine Company of BTS has been engaging in R&D and manufacturing of slag pot carrier for quite a few years, and thus established itself into the domestic leading producer of such carriers. The various types and tonnages carriers independently developed and produced by the company have been widely applied in all the major steel works of China. The successful delivery of the largest carriers of Asia has once again proved the outstanding strength of the Heavy Machine Company of BTS in this industry in China.
Fruitful achievements in technological innovation
Shenhua Group Corporation Limited worked with related Chinese companies in designing and producing of 20 sets of roof supports ranging from 2.4 meters to 6.3 meters, saving more than RMB 2 billion compared with imported ones. We raised the coal recovery ratio by 4 percentage points by applying "extended working face technology" in 15 working faces in Shendong Mines. "Efficient amp; safe combustion technology for 600 MW power generation units" ("Shenhua Coal" fired) has passed trail operation in unit 4, Taishan. IT-based management pushed forward. IT-based management plan for Shendong Mines has been finished, production management system, dynamic management of mining operation links,complete equipment and production programming have all been IT-based. By using interval equipment diagnose system, we reduced the downtime per ten thousand coal production. Gas monitoring system has been used underground, and underground miner positioning system has been used in Shendong Mines to assure a safety operation. The Office Automation system has been in operation in Shenhua Group and China Shenhua. At the same time, Automation has also been adopted in our railway companies, Huanghua Harbor and Tianjin Coal Berth, further improving efficiency.
